چکیده

In the present computational study, we focus on graphene ribbons with zigzag edge atoms with their unsaturated bonds either dangling or terminated by various adsorbates ~H, O, or Cs!. Using this system as a test case, we discuss the two important contributions to the work function—the first one being an anisotropic bulk property related to the electron affinity of the material, and the second one being directly related to the surface dipole moment caused by the spill over of electronic charge into the vacuum. The latter contribution, which tends to increase the work function, can to a large extent be minimized by a judicious choice of adsorbates ~typically, adsorbates that are more electropositive than the surface!. The former face-dependent contribution turns out to be the minimum possible work function achievable for a given surface. Our calculations are based on density-functional theory within the local density approximation using nonlocal pseudopotentials and a plane wave basis set. @S0163-1829~99!03632-2#

Electronic properties of hydrogenated porous Graphene based nanoribbons: A density functional theory study

The structural and electronic properties of the hydrogenated porous graphene nanoribbons were studied by using density functional theory calculations. The results show that the hydrogenated porous graphene nanoribbons are energetically stable. The effects of ribbon type and ribbon width on the electronic properties of these nanoribbons were investigated. It was found that both armchair and zigz...

Graphene Ribbons Terminated by Nanotubes

We study by density functional and large scale tight-binding transport calculations the electronic structure, magnetism and transport properties of the recently proposed graphene ribbons with edges rolled to form nanotubes. Edges with armchair nanotubes present magnetic moments localized either in the tube or the ribbon and metallic or half-metallic character, depending on the symmetry of the j...

Computational study of bandgap-engineered Graphene nano ribbon tunneling field-effect transistor (BE-GNR-TFET)

By applying tensile local uniaxial strain on 5 nm of drain region and compressive local uniaxial strain on 2.5 nm of source and 2.5 nm of channel regions of graphene nanoribbon tunneling field-effect transistor (GNR-TFET), we propose a new bandgap-engineered (BE) GNR-TFET. Simulation of the suggested device is done based on non-equilibrium Green’s function (NEGF) method by a mode-space approach...

Comparison of Raman spectra and vibrational density of states between graphene nanoribbons with different edges

Vibrational properties of graphene nanoribbons are examined with density functional based tight-binding method and non-resonant bond polarization theory. We show that the recently discovered reconstructed zigzag edge can be identified from the emergence of high-energy vibrational mode due to strong triple bonds at the edges. This mode is visible also in the Raman spectrum. Total vibrational den...
